My first new single in five years. With musicians from my New Zealand project ‘Mystic Poets Cycle’, Oliver Kraft (guitar) Rob Mita (bass) Seetha Manognya (backing vocals).

In the spirit of Buddha’s ‘neti neti’ and Osho’s ‘you are not the body, you are not the mind’ this is my free translation of 18th century Punjabi mystic Bulleh Shah’s well-known poem ‘Bulleh ki jaana main kaun?’

Lyrics

I’m not in the mosque or the palace
Not among pure or unpure souls
Neither Moses nor the Pharoah
Who is this Bulleh to know? Bulleh ki janna main kaun?

I’m not in the whorehouse nor the temple
Neither drunk nor fast alone
Nor do I sit with Algebra or Bible
Who is this Bulleh to know? Bulleh ki janna main kaun?

I’m not in happiness nor in sorrow
My name I neither chose nor own
No city or country on Earth can claim me
Who is this Bulleh to know? Bulleh ki janna main kaun?

From first to last I search my being
Where no other can be known
No great thinker no lost dreamer
Who stands then in Bulleh’s shoes alone? Bulleh ki jana main kaun?
