Five years ago, on 8 November 2016, the Government of India announced the demonetisation of all ₹500 and ₹1,000 banknotes of the Mahatma Gandhi Series.

At that time, Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed that the action would curtail the shadow economy and reduce the use of illicit and counterfeit cash to fund illegal activities.

Also announced was the disbursement of new ₹500 and ₹2,000 banknotes in exchange for the demonetised banknotes.

The Indian Government has now (October 2021) decided to reintroduce the ₹ 2000 (€ 23) banknotes with the image of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, now known as Osho.

Apparently Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated, “Gandhi does not represent our new economy anymore, and Osho is a new role model.”

I want you to be rich in every possible way – material, psychological, spiritual.

I want you to live the richest life that has ever been lived on the earth.”

The first banknotes with Osho’s image will be issued on April 1, 2022.
