A well-loved composition by Praful.
Ide Were Were is an African-flavored chill-out song, based on the ancient traditional chant for Ochún, the Orichá (goddess) of love from the Yoruba religion, which was practiced in what is today Nigeria and Benin. Taken by the slaves across to the New World, it formed the base of the Santeria religion in Cuba and the Candomblé in Brazil.
Like a black Aphrodite, Ochún’s seductive and sensual power encapsulates the feminine ideal. In nature, she rules over rivers.
I made the adaptation and harmonisation of this then pretty much unknown African song in 2000. It was recorded by the Mantra singer Deva Premal and has since become very popular in singing circles all over the globe.
Since last year I have started playing it in my own concerts and have finally made my first recording of it, featuring Pernilla Kannapinn on vocals. It also features a Marimbula (a giant Kalimba), which gives it a distinct African flavour.
