A slideshow of photos taken in India by Premgit from one of his recent journeys there
In this gallery are a selection of pictures taken in India and South East Asia. There are many different tribal groupings in this region and for the last few years I have been exploring India in particular. Although not desperately poor like many low caste city dwellers, they are treated appallingly by the government and are subject to landgrabbing and marginalisation that makes life more difficult than need be.
The sadhus of India still have a strong presence, although the Aghori are now very rare due to their arduous practice that puts many people off. This year I went to the Kumbh Mela in Haridwar and managed to meet and photograph a few of the more extreme disciplines that the Nagas undertake. Two of the yogis are here, one who is holding his arm in the air, and has not lowered it for seven years and the baba who has been standing for twelve years. Whatever you think this is a testament to commitment.
