Photos by Premdharma taken in the German capital, on endless walks and bike tours (best seen fullscreen)
After the reunification of East and West Berlin in 1990, there has been a huge building frenzy. Many new buildings with impressive architecture came up, mainly in what was previously East Berlin. Having been here since 1967, I could experience all these changes first-hand. The new government district, with the Federal Chancellery (first image), was planned with the intent of being spacious and open. It offers many opportunities for strolling about and relaxing.
The mix of old and new has always had a great appeal to me. One example is the Museumsinsel, an island between two canals, that is home to various museums and theatres.
In general, Berlin is a city with a lot of greenery and water, so you can always find riverside paths and places that invite you to be outside or meet up with friends. Above are photos of the Westhafen. Yes, it’s an inland port, connecting two rivers with two canals and the rail network.
Photographers call this the ‘golden hour’ and I am quite partial to that, as you can see. The above photos were taken at the Lietzensee, which is a lake in the middle of town, and the ones below were taken along the River Spree, which is the river that meanders through Berlin.
You were asking, how an Austrian ended up in Berlin? That’s an old story. I came here way back in 1967, when I was 24. I came to work as an actor. Then came the 1968s movement with the many big changes that also impacted my life. From the planks of the stage, that was my world, I moved onto the different boards of the wider world.
I then picked up painting, and photography came into play so that I could publish my artwork.
I would trade Berlin for another place only if that place was by the sea!
