New devotional songs by Priya

For this year’s Guru Purnima celebrations at Osho Fragrance, Priya composed and sang a set of original songs. The creative process has been described, with interesting details, by the two producers, Mrinali and Jahanvi, who have worked closely with Priya to create the final tracks:

Priya wrote the lyrics, composed the original melodies and provided us with all the original lead vocals. We then used Suno AI as a creative and production tool – not only for developing the musical arrangements and backing layers, but also for exploring ideas and improvising on some of the compositions. In a few songs there are AI-generated backing vocals as well, but the main vocals are Priya’s original recordings.

AI allowed us to experiment with different musical directions for the same composition, and helped us explore different styles, rhythms, instruments and arrangements. And sometimes it would give us an idea that opened up a completely new way of looking at that particular composition.

The way we wrote the prompts was a very important part of the process. The more detailed and specific the prompt, the more interesting and refined the musical possibilities became. It allowed us to experiment extremely quickly and compare different ideas before deciding what suited each song best.

Of course, Priya participated in exploring the different musical possibilities. She helped us choose the musical style and select the final arrangement. Her deep musical understanding was an important part of shaping the songs.

Priya’s journey with music and songwriting goes back many decades. She studied music, along with an MA in Philosophy, and during her years in the Pune Commune and later in Rajneeshpuram, she sang in Osho’s presence on several occasions – including Osho’s birthday celebration in Manali in 1985 and a celebration in Mumbai in 1986. She sang many times in Buddha Hall. On 9 April 1989 she sang the last song in Osho’s presence, just before his final discourse. Her large body of devotional music, in the meantime, comprises around 40 very popular bhajan albums. Not to mention that for 12 years she sang daily on Aastha TV, recording more than 2,100 songs during that period.

Once we had finalised an arrangement, with Priya’s active involvement, we could separate the individual musical layers – tabla, keyboard, bansuri, drums, guitar and others. We would then replace the AI lead vocal with Priya’s original vocal recording and work on the final recording, mixing and production.

For both of us, the experience was amazing. What we found particularly exciting was the speed of experimentation. Things that could traditionally take weeks to try out, could be explored within minutes. The final completed tracks were then played for the first time during this year’s Guru Purnima Celebrations at Osho Fragrance.
