Buddha of Compassion explores the contrast between chaos and peace, and the constant movement of thoughts and emotions that fills the human mind. At its centre sits the Buddha, observing the polarities of life without being caught up in them.

The video brings the idea to life. The Buddha watches the world move through its many patterns – conflict, distraction, desire, fear and noise – along with the age-old question of what is right and what is wrong. Gradually the movement gives way to stillness, and the Buddha rises beyond what the video calls the “ocean of noise”.

The message is simple: we don’t have to become everything that passes through our minds. We can step back, observe and return to ourselves.

This track first appeared in 2002 on ‘Human Contact’, the album by Galactic Agents – the electronic project Bhikkhu created in the early 2000s. Bhikkhu had begun revisiting Galactic Agents, with plans to bring the music to streaming for the first time. Today the single gives a glimpse into a different side of his creativity – a blend of world music, electronica, trance and chillout.

Lyrics

All Buddhas of the past, present and future
Bodhisattvas
Please hear my anguished words of truth
Karma, in an ocean of joy
Let the might of your compassion arise to bring a quick end
To the flowing stream of the blood and tears
They are drunk with demonic delusions
What is right and what is wrong?

Bhikkhu

Bhikkhu Schober grew up in Germany in the 1960s and travelled the world, studying the healing effects of meditation and music. In 1990, he and his partner Waduda founded the independent label New Earth Records (originally Tao Music) in Munich. They moved the company to Boulder, Colorado, in 1995, where it is still based. The label has since published over 280 albums and reached listeners in 162 countries.

Much of Bhikkhu’s work happened behind the scenes. He helped artists develop and share their music and played an important role in the early careers of musicians such as Deuter. His travels also fed a lifelong passion for photography and videography, and he later explored book publishing.

With Buddha of Compassion, we hear Bhikkhu’s own creative voice.
