… also known as ‘The 90th Birthday’, is a comedy sketch written by British author Lauri Wylie for the theatre.
The German TV station NDR recorded a performance of the piece in 1963 (in its original English language) with a short introduction in German. This sketch went on to become the most frequently repeated TV programme ever!
The 18-minute sketch features British comedians Freddie Frinton and May Warden and has become an integral component of the New Year’s Eve schedule of many German TV stations. Versions are also shown by Danish and Swedish channels; Norwegian national television shows it on December 23rd, and it is a cult television classic in countries such as Finland, Estonia, Lithuania, the Faroe Islands, Switzerland, South Africa and Australia; the latter show it on New Year’s day.
Several of us at Osho News have seen this sketch dozens of times over the years and viewing it again this year, we decided to post it for the benefit for all of you who love a good laugh.
The version shown here is in colour as opposed to the original black-and-white, but features the same actors and is slightly in better quality.
Enjoy hearing the now famous phrase uttered by Miss Sophie which has become a household word in many countries:
Same procedure as every year, James!
