… is the advice by Johnny Depp to an acting student.
Inside the Actors Studio is an American television show on the Bravo cable television channel, hosted by James Lipton. Season 8, # 19, aired on 8.9.2002
3rd year acting student is asking the question: “Is there any advice that you would want to share not only about what to expect but maybe how to begin the whole acting experience?
The greatest piece of advice I got was from my mom. When I was a little kid – there was a kid who was bugging me in school… She said OK, I tell you what to do: if he keeps bugging you, if he puts his hands on you, you pick up the nearest rock – or whatsoever you get your hands on – and lay him out.
Then I did – and I felt better – and it worked. So, for me, that was a great lesson. Because someone had invaded my space, invaded my being, and was doing something against me that I did not want to be done, so I controlled the situation and so I ran with it. And many years later after being turned into a product by a very huge corporation, that had their hands all over me and I could not escape it, I promised myself I would continue to move forward and do my best not to compromise whatsoever, and not to allow anyone to put their hands on me and affect me in that way.
So that is the best advice I think that I can give: keep moving forward and don’t give a sh… about what anybody thinks. Just keep moving forward and do what you have to do, for you.
