Dutch creationist and millionaire building contractor Johan Huibers built a reproduction of Noah’s ark after he dreamt that Holland would be flooded once again.
Using the ancient dimensions listed in The Bible, the length of a man’s arm from elbow to fingertips, the ark turned out just over 137 meters in length and took four years to be completed. The ark was constructed by welding the metal hulls of several old barges together and then using Scandinavian pine for the skin. Among the five people who built it, was only one carpenter. And no, it was not who you are thinking about.
The ark was built approximately to scale – it is half the length and one third the width of the Biblical dimensions and is moored in Dordrecht, a town in the South of The Netherlands.
Mr. Huibers, a creationist, continued to stick to the story in Genesis, and filled the wooden ark with a menagerie of animals – made out of plastic – and even some live birds. People who visit the showpiece are already asking if there are any rooms to be had – based on their imagination about what is going to happen in December of this year according to the Mayan Calendar.
Being a 21st century more scientific minded person myself, I think it would be so much easier to load the ark with frozen eggs and sperm of all those species we can get them from. Even if many more than two each are stored it would take so much less space, no feeding involved, and no need to clean out massive excrement from the decks!
