Preview: November 19, 2012, 8:00 PM
In 1981, Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, a spiritual leader from India, and thousands of his disciples moved to Wasco and Jefferson Counties. On what had been the Big Muddy Ranch, the “sannyasins” set out to build a new city, a utopian community in the desert – Rajneeshpuram.
Thousands of people from around the world gathered here to celebrate life. They worked hard and transformed the landscape. And more than a few hoped to spend the rest of their days at this place.
But by 1986, they were gone.
We have heard from a usually reliable source that Eric Cain worked on this documentary for more than a year and has also interviewed several sannyasins. Eric Cain has a degree in Anthropology and has worked at OPB since 1987. He has produced segments and programs for just about every show with “Oregon” in the title, including Oregon Field Guide, Oregon Art Beat, The Oregon Story and now Oregon Experience and received a number of awards for his work at OPB, including two regional Emmys for “Best Director” and two more for “Best Documentary.”We welcome comments by our American friends (or abroad) who are able to see the program.
