Just before I went to India last January, I’d seen a series on BBC2 called Streets of Gold: Mumbai, about the vibrant energy of growth and how so many Indians were revelling in the wealth and success of this exciting city!

I thought, well, why not document this vibrant energy in Pune, since that was where I was going?

It happened quite by chance that I was visiting my friend Abhay’s house when the TV was showing the consecration of the new temple at Ayodhya. Of course I filmed that. When the Babri temple was being destroyed by a Hindu mob 25 years ago, I also happened to be visiting India – with my daughter Emily. We were wandering round Goa and Hampi, and there were riots everywhere. It was a bit scary…

So I just wanted to film what was happening in Pune at this particular moment and ask a random selection of friends, most of whom naturally happened to be sannyasins since I was spending most of my time in the Resort: What was their own experience of the energy of this New India?

Update 19 August 2024: the documentary has received and Award of Recognition by ImpactDocsAwards
