Listen to track 9 of Chinmaya Dunster’s newly released album.
July 1994 was the year Manish Vyas made his first trip outside India, and ‘Intimacy’ was his first original composition to be recorded. He played santoor and tabla and I played my sarod. Sangit Om hosted us in his studio in Hamburg and added bamboo flute (bansuri). The violin is by Friedmar Hitzar; we had heard him busking on the street and then brought him into the studio.
‘Intimacy’ originally formed part of my CD Lands of The Dawn, which was released in 1996 on Nightingale Records from Germany. Since the demise of Nightingale the CD has remained unavailable. Although I have recycled some of the best of it’s material into other recordings over the years, ‘Intimacy’ has never found a new home until now.
I am happy to re-introduce this lovely track to the listening public now as part of Rarities, both as a tribute to Manish as a friend and as a tip of my hat to him as an outstanding composer.
