Yashwant Deo

Shri Yashwant Deo (aka Yashwant Dev) was a renowned music composer, singer, lyricist and film music director, living in Mumbai. He scored music for Marathi plays, films and radio plays. His songs became popular in the 1960’s through singers like Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar and Arun Date, among others.

Yashwant heard Osho’s discourses and read his books for the first time when Osho had left for the USA. He then visited Rajneeshpuram and became a sannyasin there, in 1984, a year after his marriage to Karuna. “People criticized and ridiculed me but my wife stood by me,” he said to Hindustan Times. Since taking sannyas he has been writing songs on Osho, composing music, getting devotional bhajan albums published.

He has been the music director in all Guru Poornima festivals in the Poona 2 days. A video made in July 1988 became very popular. Almost all sannyasins who participate in Osho meditation camps anywhere in India celebrate white robe evening satsang with the unique devotional songs written, composed and sung by him.

Before discourse, in Osho’s presence he sung his now famous tune, ‘Tumhare Darshan Ki Bela, Ye Mausam Raas Rachaane Ka‘ which is now also in Deva Premal‘s repertoire.

The album ‘Buddha Within‘ from the World of Osho has one of his contributions.

At age 85 he won the prestigious Lata Mangeshkar Award.

Yashwant Deo passed away at age 94 from chikungunya virus, a mosquito-borne illness.
