Shukla Paksha, the brighter fortnight had started – the crescent moon was gradually moving towards the full moon. And with the ascending moon, the speed of the Sufi’s dance was also increasing. They were going to dance every night, until the moon was full. It seemed as if they were immersed in divine wine.

Perhaps they were not dancing – God was making them dance! Or God was dancing in them… though both of these statements have the same meaning. Without losing the self, one cannot loose himself in the benign shelter of God.

A person came and asked, “May I also join this dance?” The head of the Sufis replied, “How can you participate with your I-ness. This is not a dance, this is life; this is not a dance, this is existence. Moreover, before participating an exam is also required.”

The man asked, “What type of exam?” The Sufi answered, “First, observe total fasting continuously for three days. Then put some delicious food in front of you, and then choose between food and dance. If you can still choose to dance… then we will welcome you.”

Of course – without austerity, was is dance?

प्रिय कृष्ण सरस्वती,

प्रेम। शुक्ल पक्ष शुरू हुआ था – चांद धीरे धीरे पूर्णिमा की ओर बढ़ रहा था।

और चांद के बढ़ने के साथ ही सूफी फकीरों के नृत्य की गति बढ़ती जाती थी।

पुरे चांद के होजाने तक वे रोज रात्रि नाचने वाले थे।

किसी अलौकिक मदिरा में वे जैसे डूबे थे।

वे शायद नाचते नहीं थे – प्रभु ही उन्हें नचा रहा था !

या, प्रभु ही उनमें नाच रहा था।

वैसे दोनों बातें एक ही अर्थ रखती हैं।

स्वयं में मिटे बिना कोई स्वयं को प्रभु में छोड़ता ही कहां है ?

एक व्यक्ति ने आकर पूछाः ” क्या मैं भी इस नृत्य में सम्मिलित होसकता हूँ ?”

सूफियों के प्रधान ने कहाः ” ‘मैं’ के रहते कैसे सम्मिलित होसकोगे ? फिर, यह नृत्य नहीं, जीवन है — नृत्य नहीं,अस्तित्व है। और, फिर इसमें सम्मिलित होने के पूर्व परीक्षा भी तो आवश्यक हैं ? ”

उस आदमी ने पूछाः “कैसी परीक्षा ?”

फकीर ने कहाः ” पहले तीन दिन का पूर्ण उपवास करो। फिर स्वादिष्ट भोजन रखना स्वयं के सामने और फिर नृत्य और भोजन में चुनाव करना। यदि फिर भी तुम नृत्य को चुन सको तो हम तुम्हारा स्वागत करेंगे.”

निश्चय ही – तप के बिना नृत्य कहां ?

तप के बिना गीत कहां – गान कहां ?

तप के बिना सुर कहां – संगीत कहां ?
