This sculpture is a manifestation of the relationship I wanted to have, but was not having. After I made it, slowly slowly, we manifested this in our relationship, Arpana and I.

The woman sits alone in nature, surrounded by her animal friends. A snake, a koala, birds in the trees, fish in the water. She is happy with them. There is no space for her partner. But then he arrives, in a boat filled with gifts for her: food, fruit, a fan for when she has hot flashes, a cat.

When they are satiated with one another’s company, he returns to the Land of the Man, where he is free to watch his noisy sports on TV, make his money, have his alone time, create his stained glass, talk to his ex-girlfriends, or what-have-you.

It’s like the story Osho used to tell us, that we all loved so much, where the man lives on his island, and the woman lives on her island, and sometimes, in mystery, they meet in the water between them, for a magical time. Then they both go back to their safe homes where they have things just the way they want them, each in their own special energy.

A teaching. A dream. A way of life that works for us. Now that we are older we need more alone time and are not as flexible with one another’s habits.
