Feeling helpless in the face of the world’s craziness? Nayana remembers what Osho told her in 1988 when she asked how to save the world, and why it still guides her today

Once upon a time in the far distant past (1988!) I sat at the feet of my Master and asked him how I could save the world. The answer he gave me then has been a guiding light through my life ever since, and I think it is more relevant than ever.
As a very short synopsis, I told him I felt helpless and insignificant to stop the destruction of this beautiful planet. Here is a small extract from his answer (the full text can be found in the discourse series Hari Om Tat Sat, chapter 8, question 1)
“You have seen where hate can lead humanity, to its ultimate suicide, but you have not seen the possibility that love, growing to its height, may simply prevent this crisis from happening. No one is insignificant, because everyone has a heart and everyone has love and everyone has sensitivity, consciousness and he can reach to the very ultimate peak of existence. A single individual can prevent this great crisis, what to say of millions of people full of love and joy and silence?”
It was such a powerful message that it made my heart commit to growing my love and consciousness and to bringing a loving environment wherever I go – perhaps setting others alight, celebrating for a moment, and pouring light and love back into the energy field that connects us all. I see many Osho lovers doing the same thing, simply, naturally through their everyday lives, touching the people whose paths they cross with this energy he infected us with. Just look at Punya and her loving dedication to Osho News, this beacon of light. And there are many others, no big deal, just sharing what they have received. This is what I call celebration, and the more of us that do this consciously the stronger the field of love grows.
That’s what Over the Edge, my home in Portugal, is all about. It is my way of celebrating life. It is a beautiful, wild place surrounded by nature, a peaceful haven where love grows and spreads. We live here amongst the cork oak woodland with horses, dogs and cats – and the wild ones who share the land. Our whole intention is to let nature guide us in our guardianship of this place for the time that we have, giving more than we take at all times. As Osho said, “Don’t use this beautiful planet as a railway station guest house. It is not a waiting room. It is our home for the time being, and it will remain the home for somebody else… Nobody belongs here, but for the moment we are here, and for the moment, we have to be here totally, intensely. And we have to make this moment as beautiful as possible.” (The Golden Future, chapter 22)
And I must just add, it’s certainly not that we are sitting around flapping our angel wings and polishing our haloes! No, we are fully engaged in what life brings moment to moment, rolling with the messy and divine business of being human in a physical body in a sometimes challenging world. We are living Zorba the Buddha every day, answering that eternal question “Who Am I?”
So for any of you who are feeling helpless and insignificant in the face of the craziness all around us, remember you are not – love is all powerful. If you would like to come and celebrate life with us in this special place, laugh a while together and save the world – our doors are open.
