Deva Premal’s latest release, Maestro Cacao, was born within the sacred space of a cacao ceremony, deep in the Costa Rican jungle.
The song is both a musical offering and an act of cultural reciprocity, honouring the indigenous Maleku people and the living traditions of ceremony and song.
The track brings together an international circle of musicians. Deva Premal shares vocals with Lady Phyl and producer Joby Baker, who plays a 5-string arbutar.
At the heart of the composition is Costa Rican musician Amor Reluciente (Daniel Mora), lyricist and composer, who contributes tali — a Maleku drum — and ocarina, a clay flute. His deep connection with the Maleku indigenous community gives the track its cultural grounding.
Maestro Cacao leads us through the forest as if tasting life itself — the nourishment, the sweetness, and the vitality that sustains body and spirit. In its embrace, a doorway opens, inviting ancestors, spirits, and guardians to listen, to guide, to heal. The cacao becomes more than a flavour: it is life, it is song, it is shelter.
Deva Premal launched the single from Cusco, Peru, at the start of her South American tour, describing it as “our honouring of the cacao, of the ceremonies, of the indigenous people, of the sacred foods.”
All proceeds from Maestro Cacao go directly to the Maleku people, to support the recording of their own music and the continuation of their cultural traditions.
