Rashmi Bharti, co-founder and founding secretary of the Avani Society in Uttarakhand has been nominated for the 2024 Jamnalal Bajaj Award for Application of Science & Technology for Rural Development
Rashmi Bharti’s journey started in 1999 with the setting up of the Avani non profit, a community-based organisation built on the principles of sustainability. It has helped revive and preserve the traditional craft of hand spinning and weaving in the region.
Avani has now 6 centres and decentralized extraction units in 6 districts covering 114 villages. Since 2010, local farmers have been involved in the cultivation of indigo under the Himalayan Indigo Project.
The NGO has partnered with several artists and institutions for product development and testing, and has introduced children to natural dyeing through their all-natural tie-n-dye and finger-painting kits.
Through her work, Rashmi Bharti has supported and transformed the lives of countless mountain dwellers.
