Should We Have Known

Poetry

A poem by Madhuri.

redwoods

Should we have known
when we were all there together
loving each other
because (and only because)
we were bathed in love –

Should we have known
– there among the bamboos
the swans
under the trees of neem
and flame

That one day, far away
yet not so far
we would hear each other
toppling

one by one
like great redwoods

and flying away –

silent rockets
of pale flame
into the deep night sky

Should we have known
it would happen so quickly, then

because there are so many of us

and we
grow old –

Silent explosion

here

there

Hello,
goodbye

beloved
