Osho Mahakaushal College: Renamed

The college at Rani Durgavati University, Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh), where Acharya Rajneesh, known as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh or Osho, was a professor, has been renamed in his honor. The government order for this change was issued on March 12, 2024.

It is noteworthy that Osho taught at this college from 1958 to 1966. A mysterious event is associated with this period: the tree under which Osho used to park his car withered after he resigned. This incident was widely discussed within the university.

Osho began his service as a professor of philosophy on September 23, 1957, at Raipur Sanskrit College. Approximately eight months later, he was transferred to Jabalpur, where he continued his teaching career at the Government Mahakoshal College under Jabalpur University. This university is now known as Rani Durgavati University. He resigned from his position on March 18, 1966, to focus entirely on his spiritual teaching and meditation camps.

At that time, Raipur and Jabalpur were part of the same province, but now Raipur is in Chhattisgarh and Jabalpur is in Madhya Pradesh. In reality, his appointment at the Raipur Sanskrit College was a mistake. During those days, he wore wooden sandals, white khadi dhoti-kurta, had a beard, and long hair. Seeing his attire, the Education Minister assumed he was a Sanskrit scholar and sent him to Raipur. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the college did not offer philosophy as a subject. It took a considerable amount of time to correct this administrative error.

Osho’s teaching style was so lively, non-serious, enlightening, and engaging that students from other subjects such as science, arts, and commerce, in addition to philosophy students, would attend his classes at Mahakaushal College. This was considered astonishing because typically, a serious and seemingly impractical subject like philosophy attracted very few students. The number of students studying philosophy has been steadily declining over time.

For Osho’s disciples, this is a moment of joy and gratitude that the government has recognized Osho’s greatness. They are thankful for this acknowledgment.
