Mini-collages as free art born out of Samudra’s creativity
As announced in her previous article, From Collage to Street Art, we are welcoming a selection of Samudra’s mini-collages to our online Art Gallery.
As a base for her art pieces she uses driftwood and then leaves them behind in the same place where she found them. The idea is when people find them they can take them home. “It’s essentially ‘free art’ for everyone – my own way of sharing my creativity,” she says. There’s a little QR code on each one of them, which makes them interactive. The code leads to her online gallery where people can get to know more about her and purchase her collages and posters.
When asked how it all started, she wrote, “Truly, I don’t remember. I think it was in Eressos, on the island of Lesvos, near Osho Afroz, back in 2020. I was making collages on paper and then found very beautiful driftwood. I then decided that the wood could become the base for mini collages. Like visual haikus.
“My first series was made with cuts from an anatomy book. It had detailed graphic representations of cells, flowers, animals, and human body parts. The pieces were actually ‘dropped’ overnight in order to create a little buzz and draw attention to my big posters, which I was exhibiting at a gallery on the island. Despite the QR code, I didn’t hear anything back from people who might have found them. Or did maybe the morning street cleaner sweep them away?
“When travelling across Mexico I ‘dropped’ some mini-collages in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca City, Mexico City, San Cristóbal de las Casas, and then in Corozal, Belize.
“I left the series behind whenever I had to move on. I just couldn’t carry them with me, when travelling from one volunteering project to the next. No space in my suitcase!
“For me, the best series I made – and ‘dropped’ – was the one I made in Baja California Sur – first at Rancho Carisuva, and then in Todos Santos, where I used the shells of the giant Pacific oyster as support.” You can see the images in the slideshow below.
