“A life well lived”
by Parambodhi
Nikas came to Rajneeshpuram with his mum when only 15, He quickly gravitated to Chiyono, our hairdressing salon, soon after arriving at the Ranch, and was full of joy sweeping the floor and washing heads. He was a delight to be with and I was not surprised to find out many years later that he made a very successful career for himself as a stylist in San Francisco.
This was written about him in the papers during his illustrious career: “Nikas, tall and Mick Jagger-skinny, favours tight Versace jeans, muscle T-shirts, lion’s head belts (he has a collection) and lots of tattoos, for that 80’s rocker look. ‘San Francisco is a conservative town; it’s easy for me to stand out,’ he says, and he makes sure he does. He pretty much wears his heart on his sleeve — and more literally, his three-word mantra, in the form of a tattoo, on his forearm. It reads, ‘Be the Miracle’. He charges $450 for a cut and highlights, and was anointed last year by Allure magazine as the city’s top colourist. He’s known for blondes.”
I last saw him in San Francisco a few years ago. He was full of beans, was already experiencing some severe health issues, was bright and positive, still sincerely following his spiritual path and still exuding the same effervescence. I loved his beautiful heart.
He posted this recently;: “‘A life well lived,’ for me, doesn’t necessarily look like – a life filled with only good times & good looks. A life well lived for me, means having the willingness and courage to face and experience the totality that life has to offer. To face the ups and downs in life equally. Whether it be full of laughter, tears, joy or sadness. Understanding that life, and death, are my greatest teachers.
