Something to ponder

From Subhan's Desk

Subhan on the two things that make you unhappy…

Only two things make you unhappy: not getting what you want… and getting it!

When I first heard this, I was shocked! Not getting what I want was clearly a source for unhappiness. But getting it? The mind couldn’t make any sense out of it. But a little digging produced a new insight. Yes, many times I had gotten what I wanted. But the happiness that I assumed would be the result, disappeared quickly. And was followed by disappointment, and a search for something else!

A good example was when I got my first new car! I was so excited! But, in only a few weeks, I saw my mind looking at other cars, and comparing what I had bought! Did I pay too much? Was this the right color?

Then the fresh, “new” smell of the car disappeared. Then a clunking sound in the engine. And then, someone scratched my door…

It’s clear that the mind can take anything and find by thoughts and comparison and judgment, disappointment and regret!

So this “understanding” can be a great place to inquire into your own experiences!

And to finish this post, I’d like to share a quote from Oscar Wilde, who knew a thing or two about the human mind:

When the Gods wish to punish us, they answer our prayers.”

Love…
