An exercise from Lasell Jaretzki Bartlett’s book Becoming the Designated Calm Person, pages 20-23
Personal Resources is the phrase I use to describe whatever brings us a sense of relief, support, joy, or okayness. Resources can be people, animals, places, objects, experiences, beliefs, or more. Resources can be real or imaginary, living or remembered.
We can have external resources (outside our bodies) like viewing a field of wildflowers, and internal resources (inside our bodies) like the feeling of a full heart when petting your favorite animal friend. What are some of your personal resources? The next two exercises will involve an external resource and then an internal resource.
Who or what brings you a sense of relief, support, joy, or okayness?

Exercise: External Resources
- Sit or stand comfortably.
- Allow your breathing to be just as it is; no need to change anything.
- With soft eyes – feeling as if they are resting back and down into the area behind your eyeballs – let your gaze wander, noticing colors and shapes in your environment.
- Being curious, what do you notice that is pleasant?
- Let your gaze settle wherever it wants.
- Gently look inside to notice what sensations you are feeling while you are gazing in the direction of something pleasant.
- Allow your attention to rest with pleasant or neutral sensations.
- Be curious about any changes as you pay attention to what is pleasant, especially any feelings of relief or settling.
What did you learn about your external resources?
