Videha’s latest news from Mokurai, his Meditation Centre in the Italian Alps
Since opening Osho Mokurai Meditation Centre in Val Maira three years ago, much has changed; it has been expanded, and new spaces have been added or transformed – one of them is the Dakini Garden.
Dakini means: “She who moves through the sky”.
It can have different meanings, representing among other things the feminine principle of non-duality. Dakini can be the protector of the Dharma, a guide for spiritual transformation, particularly the transformation of obstacles and negative emotions into awareness. It may also symbolise complete freedom and naked (fearless) truth, sometimes in a wrathful and powerful form to annihilate ignorance. Dakini also refers to accomplished female yoginis, or spiritual and meditation Masters, who can help the meditator on the path to liberation.
The feminine is one of the essential qualities of the magic, the miraculous element of it – and the most neglected one. Its qualities of love and beauty are at the heart of creation. To see it, and to revere it, is a joy in itself.
On a deep level, these are all inner qualities of a seeker, of a practitioner, irrespective of the gender of their physical body.
In order to remember and keep the awareness and aliveness of these profound qualities always present, I wanted to have a place, a space, at Osho Mokurai – and it made sense to call it Dakini Garden. Moreover, I have given each tree and plant in the Dakini Garden the name of an enlightened woman or female Master.
At the entrance there is a beautiful Lotus fountain, a remembrance in itself of that female quality and energy. Moving on, under the gaze of the magical mountains of the Alps and under the boundless dome of the sky, we encounter Chiyono, the enlightened Zen woman who at the realisation of her ultimate freedom wrote the famous poem “No water, no moon”. Or we meet Rabiya, the greatest female Sufi Master, ready to point her finger to our inner wisdom; or Tara, the embodiment of boundless compassion.
We may see Mirabai dancing, or try to ask for advice from Agyatara, Bodhidharma’s Master. He is represented by a huge rock placed at her feet. She was the one who told Bodhidharma to bring the true Dharma to China. Or we can join Sahajo and Daya in their poetry, their dance, their love for their Masters…
We can learn and meditate with more beautiful and profound Tibetan Masters; like Yeshe Sogyal; Macik Labdrom, the founder of the Chod lineage; Ayu Khandro; Sera Khandro; Niguma, Naropa’s sister, who taught everything to Naropa… (The origin of the name Niguma (Nigu) means “truly secret” or “truly hidden”, which in the code-language of the Dakinis points to timeless awareness.)
It’s also possible to approach Tantric Masters like Sahajayoginicinta; Lakshinkara; or The Nameless One, the arrowsmith woman, Sahaja’s Master, who transmitted to him the essence of the Mahamudra – but her name is unknown – such is men’s fear of women…
There is another Sufi Master, Tavus Baba, absorbed in music and devotion; or we can sit silently with Mary Magdalene, or remember Gargi or Maitreyi, the first historically recorded enlightened women.
More enlightened women will soon be welcoming and accompanying us on our inner journey; the likes of Sera Khandro, Pragyaparamita, and the Secret One.…
To be in this garden, walking, dancing, or just sitting, is to be in great enlightening company.
As no one else in the world, Osho has spoken about how essential, crucial and utterly needed, the contribution of the feminine qualities and energies for the evolution of human consciousness is. How the empowerment of these qualities – a receptive feminine consciousness – is necessary for our growth in meditation and the unfolding of our true nature.
“Unless you become a womb, one never becomes pregnant with God… One can only surrender and allow God to happen. That’s what the quality of being feminine really is. That is the essential core of meditation.”
(Osho, Dance til the Stars Come Down from the Rafters, Ch 3)
“God has to be a guest, and only the feminine can become a host… His ways are mysterious, and only the feminine heart can understand the mysterious.”
(Osho, The Sacred Yes, Ch 30)
“What I’m teaching here is really to turn the whole world feminine…”
(Osho, The Book of Wisdom, Vol 1, Ch 7)
Next to the Dakini Garden there is a path – we called it Shunyata Path. It leads to Shunyata Hill. From its top we can contemplate this magical assembly, remember it, and dive into their ageless wisdom and love.
Here too we find the yurt, whose circular shape symbolises a microcosm of the universe and the connection between humanity and nature, heaven and earth – the Eternal Circle. Or we can contemplate the beautiful Rose Garden surrounding the Semahane, the octagonal wooden platform where we can perform the Sema, the Whirling Dervish ceremony, or other activities in the open.
To create the Dakini Garden has been a blessing for me. It was an incredibly powerful time. At the same time it gave me so much joy, and I could feel that a transmission of the feminine energy was happening. Every time, just to be there – an inner dance starts moving in my heart.
The Goddess of joy spreads her jewels like rain.
I drink from Her hands, I kiss Her hair.
Shattered by Her presence I stopped trying to keep myself together.
Blown away, I become a seagull in the storm, a crazy meteor, a ray of love.
One-thousand comets appear in the sky.
