Manu Bhai Desai #02. Dt. 26th May 1963

To Manubhai Desai

Greetings. I received your letter quite late due to being constantly away and busy. Hence, I could not respond promptly. My perspective on Samadhi Yoga is not based on any philosophical doctrine. Where there are thoughts and beliefs, neither is there samadhi nor truth. Therefore, I do not endorse any spiritual ideology or doctrine that is prevalent. In my view, all that is said about the truth is futile. Thoughts and doctrines only hinder the seeker of truth. Truth is not about beliefs but about knowing. This knowledge manifests itself in thoughtless samadhi. Knowledge is ever present. It cannot be lost. It is the essence of every being. The process of thinking obscures it. The mind becomes a veil. The lifting of this veil reveals the eternal that becomes evident once the external dust of the mind is removed.

You also asked whether past-life impressions are helpful or hindrances in attaining a spiritual life. Past-life impressions or any kind of impressions can only affect actions. In spiritual life, there is no action; it is non-action. Therefore, there are no hindrances in spiritual life, no impressions, and no seekers. Spiritual life is not within the chain of cause and effect. That chain is the bondage. It is necessary to break free from this bondage. To be outside of this chain is liberation.

Give my humble regards to everyone. I won’t be able to come to Nandurbar during the summer break. All the schedules are already fixed. I will consider coming during the monsoon.
