An exercise from Deva Michelle Tremblay’s recently published coloring book, The Confident Child: Meditation Exercises Described for Children

Recommended for: Children aged 7 and over.
Duration: Approximately 10 min.
Position: 2 by 2, facing each other, standing.
Preparation: Leave enough space between participants so they can open their arms.
Benefits of this exercise: Develop the ability to stay focused despite distractions; eventually achieve countering bullying by choosing to ignore the provocations.
Step 1: Pair up. Choose who will be the karate kid.
The karate kid stands on one leg, or simply on both feet. His right arm is extended in front of
him, thumb raised, and he stares at it. He tries not to laugh throughout the exercise.
The other person in front of him tries to distract him without touching him for 2 min. They use
various methods such as facial expressions, grimaces, sounds, singing, shouting, etc.
Step 2: Each participant stops moving and resumes a normal position. The karate kid closes
his eyes and takes one minute to observe his ability to stay focused without being distracted.
Step 3: We switch roles and then start again from step 1.
End of exercise: Each person shares with the group and assesses his ability to avoid getting
distracted.
Note: If the exercise is a repetition, ask the children how this exercise has helped them in their
daily lives and how it has influenced their behavior.
