This beautiful meditation is from The Book of the Secrets: ‘Toward the Untouched Inner Reality’: “I have used it in Channeling groups as well as Tantra groups and private Tantra meditations,” writes Madhuri
Feel an object before you. Feel the absence of all other objects but this one. Then leaving aside the object-feeling and the absence-feeling, realize.
Osho, The Book of the Secrets, Vol 1, Ch 15
The Theory
I’m not sure what theory might be involved – except a heightened awareness of, and respect for, the unseen; space; silent presence. A kind of acceptance of the changing nature of reality, in the world around us, in ourselves, and in relationships. And a contact with the depth, the witness, the unchanging.
The Method
In a group
Participants each sit on a chair or cushion before a small table on which is a tray with a vase on it; and in the vase, a rose. (If you don’t want to use cut roses, use whatever appeals to you – but a single, beautiful thing is best. A simple potted plant could work.)
Ding a bell to begin. Soft music can be used, or silence is also fine.
For 7 minutes, everyone gazes at the rose.
Ding! Now take the roses away.
For 7 minutes, gaze at the absence of the rose.
Ding!
Now, for 7 minutes, gaze at nothing: neither presence nor absence of rose.
Now sit with closed eyes for 10 minutes.
As a Tantra meditation
Both partners gaze at one rose.
Afterwards, you might not be able to, or wish to, share immediately. In a partner meditation, you might pair this with another technique or two; in a group, it might come before a break. Sharing can happen later, after a bit of time has gone by.
