Today it was blowin’ a hoolie
as the Scots say –
Wild gusts throwing rain everywhere,
stirred trees and bushes,
everything running with wet.
I dressed in jogging bottoms, knee socks,
leg warmers,
undershirt, sweater, sweatshirt-gilet –
and then added waterproof trousers
in a lovely teal,
and a waterproof jacket,
and a rain cape, hood up
over my fleece balaclava.
I got out a rag
and waterproofed my boots
anew
with waxy glop!
Seized up some insulated gloves
and a big navy brolly
and I was out the door.
Down by the canal! Bent into the wind!
Guarding my brolly
from being snatched into the water!
Enjoying the passionate conversations
of ducks
with their necks stretched out
to each other.
A long walk,
staying dry! Feet,
legs, head, chest, all of me
dry beneath the
sheltering clothes!
Turn left, over the bridge, and
back up the hidden road!
So good to walk!
In the wild hoolie –
all protected.
– I did feel loved –
